Leap Day 2016: One More Day to Celebrate and Save Lives

If you were to ask anyone whose loved one gave the gift of life in their passing or someone who is waiting for a life-saving organ transplant what they wish for most, many would wish for the same thing. They’d want more time; they’d want one more day.

February 29th is Leap Day, one extra day that typically occurs every four years. What will you do with your extra day this year? Make February 29, 2016, the day you honor the preciousness of time by registering as an organ, eye and tissue donor.

The need is urgent! Did you know?

  • Nationally, more than 120,000 men, women and children currently await life-saving organ transplants. Over 3,000 of those individuals live right here in North Carolina.
  • Hundreds of thousands more need cornea and tissue transplants.
  • On average, 142 people are added to the nation’s organ transplant waiting list each day – one every 10 minutes.
  • Sadly, an average of 22 people die each day while waiting, simply because the organ they needed did not become available in time.
