Quilt Square

Created in honor of Douglas Vaughn

This quilt square truly represents Doug Vaughn and all of his interests, hobbies, and passions!

The blue background is one of his last USPS work shirts, where he was a letter carrier. Doug retired from the USPS in 2008 after 36 years of service. Doug was a life-long member of Union Cross Moravian Church. He loved his church and the Lord. He loved woodworking. He was very talented and made many beautiful things over the years. He was also able to fix anything and loved to help anyone who had a problem or a need. Doug loved to be outdoors. He took great pride in his yard and built a beautiful flower garden that is enjoyed every day. Doug was a volunteer firefighter and EMT (retired) for 27 years at Union Cross Fire Department – Station 28. He was extremely dedicated to the department and his community. He was a bowler for over 40 years. He was even on a team with his dad and three brothers in the 1970s. Doug loved to ride motorcycles. He loved to go to Washington DC at Memorial Day to participate in Rolling Thunder for MIAs/POWs and honor those who served.

Doug loved coffee! You have never met a man who could drink coffee all day! He loved to sit and drink coffee with anyone who would listen. Max and Bizi are our two rescue dogs. Those are his babies, and they miss him terribly!

Doug loved music. He could play guitar, drums, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and baritone horn. He played in the band at our church, and even had a “cover band” in the 70s with his brothers and friends. He had a beautiful voice. He loved to listen to all kinds of music.

Doug’s biggest passion was fishing! That man loved and lived to fish! Surf fishing was his favorite. He would go to the Outer Banks twice a year, and have the time of his life. After he retired, he always had a rod and bait in his truck. He would throw in a line anywhere there was water and might be fish.

The initials in the middle are Doug’s initials in his own handwriting. Doug marked everything he owned with “DAV” in a blue paint pen. And I mean everything. These initials came off of his Shop-Vac!
