North Carolina Surpasses 5 Million Organ Donors!

Donate Life North Carolina (Donate Life NC), in partnership with the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles, is pleased to announce that over 5 million North Carolinians have registered as organ donors.

Why is this important? Currently, more than 116,000 Americans and 2,800 North Carolinians are waiting for lifesaving organ transplants. Nationally, sadly, an average of 20 people die each day waiting for a life-saving transplant. Each person who joins the registry has the potential to leave a legacy of life and love for up to 8 people. North Carolina has the 6th largest organ donor registry in the country.  As of August 30, 2017, 54.5% of North Carolinians have generously registered as a donor at the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles putting that little red heart on their driver’s license.

DMV examiners, however, ask a question of each driver that helps save thousands of lives each year—“Would you like to join the organ donor registry?”

“The organ donor registry is the largest voluntary life-saving program in the United States. It says a lot about North Carolinians that more than half of all drivers and ID card holders in our state have chosen to save others,” states Donate Life NC Executive Director Deanna Mitchell. “Since the vast majority of people register at their DMV office, we also honor all the DMV examiners across North Carolina who ask the important, life-saving question.”

North Carolinians interested in joining the donor registry can do so at their DMV or at Register as a Donor.

Donate Life NC hosted a celebration at the State Capitol in Raleigh on Monday, October 2, 2017. HonorBridge gathered with Donate Life NC, our DMV partners, Friends for Life Ambassadors, and our friends at LifeShare of the Carolinas and Miracles in Sight to commend a momentous accomplishment for us all to be proud of.
