Eric Stafford’s Journey to a New Heart

Eric Stafford was living a full and healthy life until he experienced “flu-like symptoms” while traveling through South America in early 2024. Within days, his condition worsened, and he began retaining fluid. The diagnosis that followed was life-altering: cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. The news hit Eric hard.

“Suddenly, the life I knew was upended,” said Eric. “Emotionally, I was wrecked, but my faith remained.”

To stabilize his condition, doctors implanted a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), a mechanical pump that helped his weakened heart do its job while he waited for a transplant.

“After enduring this chapter, I was placed on the transplant list, where I waited approximately two and a half months for a new heart,” he said.

That call eventually came when a donor heart became available.

Today, I stand renewed, given a second chance at life,” said Eric. “This journey has reaffirmed my belief that God’s power and abilities far surpass any human understanding or limitation. No matter how dire the circumstances may seem, His grace is unceasing.”

Following his transplant, Eric felt compelled to write to his donor’s family. He doesn’t know much about the person who saved his life, but he imagines they were someone full of love who saw the beauty and importance of giving life to another.

“I basically said, I want to hold you in my heart and thank you for the precious gift you have given me through your loved one’s selflessness,” said Eric. “Knowing that someone so selfless chose to give life and hope to a stranger is a profound act of kindness that I will forever cherish. Writing to you is an act of gratitude and connection—a way to honor the memory of your loved one and to acknowledge the incredible sacrifice they made. I am deeply grateful; your words and compassion have touched my soul and reinforced my belief in the goodness of humanity.”

Since receiving his new heart, Eric’s biggest accomplishment has been deepening his interfaith work and embracing a more meaningful spiritual path. He now has the strength to attend events, participate in outreach, and connect with communities in ways he could only dream of before.

“I am now able to fully celebrate special occasions, like family gatherings and spiritual ceremonies, which I previously couldn’t attend due to health limitations,” said Eric. “Looking ahead, I am inspired to continue my service, foster understanding among diverse communities, and pursue future goals with renewed hope and resilience, knowing that my journey has transformed me into a stronger, more compassionate person.”

Eric is committed to honoring his donor’s legacy every day. With each step forward, he carries their gift in his heart.

“If I could meet my donor in person, I would thank them from the depths of my heart. I would look into his/her eyes and tell them how his/her sacrifice has transformed my life. I would express my eternal gratitude for their gift and promise to live each day in a way that honors their incredible act of generosity and love.”
