My brother, Michael Charles Smith, was 57 years old when he passed away. His death was sudden and completely shattered our lives. Michael was one of a kind.
He was 15 years older than me, and growing up, I remember spending more time with him than anyone else. He took me everywhere. If I got homesick at a friend’s house at 2 a.m., you better believe he was on his way to pick me up. I have always felt like I had two dads, and I was extremely blessed to have him in both my life and my children’s lives.
Michael was always present and supportive. He was genuine, patient, kind, and loved kids and animals. He was the glue that held our family together. A strong Christian, he was always trying to lead others to Christ. He was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he taught my son everything he knows about the sport. He loved his family and friends deeply, and while he was not one to say it out loud, he showed it in everything he did. Everyone knew they could count on Michael.
I have said since the day he passed that God took him because he was too good for this world. Michael was always helping people, and even in death, he continued to help others.
When my brother passed, our family was devastated. We had no idea he had any health problems. He was active and seemed perfectly healthy. It was unexpected and unbelievable. We have been in a dark place since that day, but I lean on God and encourage my family to do the same.
Michael had registered as an organ donor, and it was noted on his license. Even though it was an incredibly difficult decision for my mom to make, she wanted to honor his wishes. I am thankful that through our loss, there was still a silver lining. Michael’s organ donation gave others a second chance at life.
I wish we could have some kind of communication with his recipients. It would feel like we could be closer to him in some way. If they could know anything about Michael, I would want them to know this: he loved people, and he always wanted to help. That is exactly what he did, right up until the very end.
